Pumping station
A pumping station is a facility that transports wastewater (sinks, toilets, laundry, etc.) to a pumping station (aerated lagoons) where it is treated before being released into the environment. There are 8 pumping stations in Saint-Lazare.
Since 2022-2023, we have been working to obtain the necessary authorizations to upgrade the Bédard pumping station.
The major work will involve :
- Increase the capacity of Bédard pumping station.
- Install a new force main in the right-of-way of Rue des Loisirs, Montée Saint-Lazare and under the trail reserved for off-road vehicles that runs along the rear lots of the agricultural land towards the pumping station.
These modifications will:
- Allow the sanitary network to regain its capacity to transport wastewater to the Sainte-Angélique pumping station;
- Connect new properties or extend the network to serve existing properties when individual septic systems (septic tanks and leach fields) reach the end of their useful life.

Sewer back-up
The City operates a sewage system to which several properties are connected. Property owners are required to install a device or equipment (safety valve or check valve) intended to reduce the risk of sewer back-up or the consequences of sewer back-up, and keep this device or equipment in proper working order.
This device or equipment must be installed on the discharge pipe of any plumbing fixture or group of plumbing fixtures—most notably a toilet, shower, sink, washing machine and floor drain—located in the basement of a building and must meet the standards set forth in the Plumbing Code. This device or equipment allows water to flow in a single direction—the same direction as the municipal sewer.
In the event of a malfunction, the City is not responsible for damages caused to the building or its contents due to flooding caused by sewer back-up.
Sewer back-up can occur as a result of heavy rain, a defective plumbing system, a break or a blocked pipe.
In the event of a sewer back-up, residents can request assistance from Public Works by:
- Providing:
- Their complete contact information
- A brief description of the request
- The specific location where service is required (address, intersection, streets)
- Completing online request (a follow-up number is provided)
- Leaving a message at 450-424-8000, ext. 250
- If the request is urgent and cannot wait until the offices re-open, call 311.

Wastewater treatment plant
Located at the end of Rue du Parc-Industriel on the edge of the Cité-des-Papillons sector, the City of Saint-Lazare’s aerated lagoon wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) was built in 1996 as part of Québec’s wastewater treatment program.
At the time of its construction, the plant was designed to receive and treat the City’s wastewater until the year 2016. The plant will be upgraded (2022) to meet the current needs of over 2,500 property owners and the needs of new and existing sectors for the next 30 years (until 2052).
Municipal wastewater comes from toilets, household wastewater (kitchen, bathroom, laundry, and water generated by some household appliances other than a toilet) and commercial wastewater. This wastewater contains detergents, grease, solvents, various debris and organic matter, fecal germs, etc. It is transported through an underground pipe (i.e.: the sanitary sewer system) to the treatment plant for pre-treatment (removal of solid matter) followed by treatment in the four (4) aerated ponds, before being discharged into the watercourse (which is why it is important to avoid disposing of toxic products in your sinks and toilets).
