Pruning done by the City
For the safety of road users, the City is currently clearing vegetation and will continue clearing it for the coming weeks and months:
- Along municipal roads
- Around signs
If vegetation encroaches on the roadway or interferes with the visibility of road users, residents can prune their own vegetation if they wish. Otherwise, our teams will do the work in front of properties and on the side yard of properties located on a street corner.
Municipal interventions are based on good practices, with a focus on pruning. Felling is reserved only for small trees which, by growing under larger ones, obstruct the light on the public road.
Tables of the vegetation clearances in road margins in the different speed zones (30, 40, 50 and 70 km/h) as well as the illustrations are available in the document below:
The City meets the recommended distances according to the standards of the Ministère du Transport du Québec.

Vegetation control by Hydro-Québec
Works scheduled for March 2025
Hydro-Québec is currently carrying out selective felling and clearing of trees that pose a risk to public safety and power system reliability. Pruning work will also be carried out at certain locations.
For further details, please consult the following notice (in French only).
Servitude / right-of-way
Hydro-Québec regularly carries out vegetation control activities within the Saint-Lazare territory in an effort to reduce the vulnerability of the electricity network, increase the network’s reliability and ensure public safety. The activities involve pruning and felling trees located near power lines. Hydro-Québec generally mandates a company to do the work.
Private property
In the event that trees are located outside Hydro-Québec’s right-of-way, and therefore on private property, property owners affected by these activities are notified in advance. They should therefore expect the presence of manual logging equipment and fellers during this type of operation. Regular maintenance is usually done on the rear portion of lots, for which permission is not required.
Planting
Avoid unwelcome surprises and having to cut down a tree that will have taken years to grow to maturity.
Certain species become too big for Hydro-Québec to allow them to grow near power lines. This applies mainly to species that grow to be higher than 2.5 metres at maturity. These are referred to as incompatible species. To help you choose the right species of tree to plant safely, don't hesitate to use Hydro-Québec's online tool, Choose the Right Tree or Shrub.
During vegetation control activities, these species are automatically cut by Hydro-Québec, regardless of their size at the time of the intervention.
Tree-cutting debris
Tree-cutting debris is left scattered on the ground and outside waterway zones and roads. Trunks and branches (of larger diameters) are cut to about 4’ (1.2 m) or 8’ (2.4 m) and stacked at the site where the work was completed.
Information
Hydro-Québec is making available to residents a map showing their work schedule. You can consult it here.
