Ville de Saint-Lazare adopts a prudent and rigorous budget for 2024
Elected officials and municipal department managers have opted for responsible management of finances and services in a challenging economic climate for all.
In a spirit of prudence and rigor, the Ville de Saint-Lazare City Council adopted the 2024 budget during an extraordinary on December 19. The budget, which totals $43.1 million, sets the course for responsible and rigorous management of public funds. Despite repeated inflationary and interest rate hikes in 2023, Ville de Saint-Lazare succeeded in limiting the tax bill increase to 4.45% for the average single-family home.
Despite the 5% consumer price index in September 2023 and the precarious economic situation, Ville de Saint-Lazare has managed to minimize its property tax rate for 2024 to 3.78%, from 0.6034 to 0.6262.
It should be noted that the City's incompressible expenses increased by 6.62%, representing 85% of the City's budget. Among these expenses, we find significant increases in co-payments from the Municipalité régionale de comté (MRC) 18.71%, the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal (CMM) 17.53%, the Autorité régionale de transport métropolitain (ARTM) 4.00%, and the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) 6.55%.
Even so, this property tax increase represents $13 per month for an average single-family home costing $467,600, which the municipal council considers reasonable in the circumstances.
In this context, the City is staying the course on some of its flagship initiatives, notably its projects to protect the environment and wetlands, its dynamic community life, and the development of eco-responsible urban planning projects that are sensitive to the realities of households and businesses.
