Winners of the 2023 Green Design Contest revealed

October 2, 2023

The City and the Comité consultatif sur l'environnement (CCE) of Saint-Lazare are proud to announce the winners of this first edition, which ran from June 15 to August 31, 2023.

First of all, we'd like to thank all the participants for their efforts in making improvements that benefit our water and our environment.

Among other criteria, the judges were looking for landscaping composed of plants planted directly in the ground, offering a variety of native and perennial species. Of course, no pesticides or chemical fertilizers were to be used.

Congratulations to:

First place: Brigitte Rioux

"Faced with an increasingly hot climate and soil hostile to grass, I decided to adapt to the climate. Since then, I haven't regretted the grass and I love contemplating this landscape where pollinators and birds can be seen in abundance."

The first prize is an exemplary design that combines biodiversity, low-maintenance spaces and good soil infiltration. Maintenance is kept to a minimum. Above all, there is no grass in this design, but rather a diversity of ground cover.

Second place: Nancy Roy

"Our ecological landscaping contributes to the biodiversity of the area, provides nectar and pollen for pollinating insects, reduces water consumption and reduces maintenance and noise pollution from lawnmowers."

The creation of this innovative flower meadow represents a living floral environment, welcoming pollinators and small fauna. It gives free rein to biodiversity and a balanced ecosystem. The majority of the species planted are indigenous and drought-resistant. It requires no maintenance.

Third place: Véronique Brochu

"Our terrain is sandy and sloping. Grass required a lot of water and maintenance. We replaced it with many ground cover plants, such as thyme (different species and colors), moss, phlox, aubriet, lavender, fescue, mulberry, serviceberry, etc."

A fine example of adaptation, this low-maintenance, sloping space manages rainwater while promoting soil infiltration and groundwater recharge. The use of ground cover, fruit trees and perennial flowers attract pollinators, butterflies and birds. Constant flowering, no mowing and minimal maintenance. It's bliss!

Three (3) participation prizes were also drawn at random among the participants.

  • Elizabeth Landry
  • Norm Szekely
  • Andrée-Anne Lavigne

The Ecological Landscaping Contest is part of a vision to beautify the City, while encouraging citizens to use their creativity and imagination to create ecological landscapes that are better adapted to natural conditions and require less water and maintenance in general.

We encourage you to continue along this path and hope that these inspiring practices will snowball!
