An Unusual Fire to Fight in December 2024
On the evening of Sunday, December 8, the Ville de Saint-Lazare Service des incendies was contacted regarding a type of fire that is uncommon in our region.
A fire involving decomposing tree stumps, branches and trunks was in progress at the Chevrier sandpit. Although there was no immediate danger of the fire spreading outside the quarry site, it was creating smoke and sometimes odours that could be felt over a wide area.
The City’s firefighters worked for several days to extinguish the fire, in collaboration with the ministère de l’Environnement, de la Lutte contre les changements climatiques, de la Faune et des Parcs (MELCCFP) and the Direction de santé publique (DSPu) de la Montérégie.
Finally, on December 13, the recommendations imposed on neighbors by the DSPu were lifted. The fire had been greatly reduced.
We must acknowledge the titanic efforts of our firefighters, who spared no effort, despite Mother Nature's winter jolts, to ensure a safe environment for our population. Many thanks!
