Major Rail Safety Announcement

March 14, 2024

On Wednesday, March 13, at the intersection of Chemin Sainte-Angélique and Rue Duhamel, Ville de Saint-Lazare welcomed the Minister of Transport and Quebec Lieutenant, Mr. Pablo Rodriguez. Mr. Rodriguez made an important announcement concerning investments in rail safety in the province of Quebec, including a major subsidy for Saint-Lazare.

Peter Schiefke, Member of Parliament for Vaudreuil-Soulanges, acted as Master of Ceremonies for the occasion. In addition to the Minister, Saint-Lazare Mayor Genevieve Lachance addressed the media and observers.

Ville de Saint-Lazare was awarded a grant of $472,679.13, covering 80% of expenses, for the construction of a safety fence along 2.2 km of Canadian Pacific Kansas City Limited (CPKC) tracks in Saint-Lazare. The balance of the cost of the work, estimated at nearly $600,000.00, will be paid from a surplus in the budget earmarked for this project.

The fence, with a maximum height of six (6) feet, is primarily intended to improve the safety of Saint-Lazare residents. Why wait for the worst to happen? Prevention always has its place. Especially since the number of intrusions on the railroad has not diminished over time.

"From the very beginning of this project, we have been convinced that such an initiative is essential to improving rail safety in the region," insists Saint-Lazare mayor Geneviève Lachance.

The grant application, submitted in August 2022, was supported by Peter Schiefke, Member of Parliament for Vaudreuil-Soulanges. Mr. Schiefke acted as the voice of the Lazarois community in the House of Commons, helping to speed up the process. Ville de Saint-Lazare thanks him for his dedication.

If all goes well, work should start as early as this year. The City will soon receive offers for professional services, followed by bids for the work itself.
