Unveiling of the first artistic mural and inauguration of Place Maurice-Chartrand

October 14, 2022

Ville de Saint-Lazare proudly unveiled its first permanent art mural during the inauguration of Place Maurice-Chartrand, a public site recently developed for the citizens in the heart of downtown Saint-Lazare. The work, by artist Melissa Del Pinto, is the result of a collaboration with MU, in which citizens had the pleasure of assisting the artist in its creation. It highlights the city's history, including its equestrian heritage, its wildlife, and its built heritage, and its location helps to reinforce the sense of belonging of Lazarois.

Painted on the wall of a building that bears witness to the past and is rooted in the history of the village, the first-ever mural is sure to appeal to passers-by and families who frequent the space. The Chez Maurice establishment is part of the history of the Town, and the Sainte-Angélique rest area has been renamed "Place Maurice-Chartrand" to perpetuate the memory of a pioneering family that settled in the early 1900s, and more specifically of a businessman involved in his community and his iconic Chez Maurice establishment, which is widely recognized.

The project would not have been possible without the modification of the municipal by-laws, the important contribution of the members of the committee, which included Carole Marcoux, volunteer involved in the community in many ways, but also Anick Chevrier, vice-president of the Saint-Lazare Historical Society, and Gisèle Lapalme, Saint-Lazare's artist-painter, as well as the financial contribution of the Conseil des arts et de la culture de Vaudreuil-Soulanges and of its Cultural and Digital Innovation Program.

Artist Melissa Del Pinto and Julie Lambert of Mu Mtl surrounded by volunteer Donald Caron and several members of the Chartrand family: Jacques Chartrand, Mélodie Chartrand, Marc-Antoine Chartrand, Paul Chartrand, Richard Chartrand, Guy Chartrand, Cindy Chartrand, Guylaine Poissan, Jean-Maurice Chartrand, Louis Matte, Hélène Chartrand, Danielle Chartrand, Christine Matte, Louis-Philippe Matte, Julie Matte.

Site accessible to the public
Place Maurice-Chartrand, a welcoming, safe and accessible space, will become a place of exchange between members of the community.
