Branch collections – 2012 pilot project
Organic matter sent to landfill sites are an important source of greenhouse gases, this includes dead leaves, grass clippings and branches.
Above and beyond leaf collections in the fall and spring, the Town wishes to reduce even
further the amount of organic matter sent to landfill. In this respect and while keeping
in mind the size of Saint-Lazare’s territory and impressive forest cover, the Town wishes
to proceed to a branch collection pilot project in 2012.
The number of addresses serviced will therefore be limited.
Project duration, online registration and conditions
1. The project spans an 8 –month period from April to November 2012;
2. Residents wishing to take advantage of this service must register online ahead of time;
3. The Town assumes the cost of the service;
4. Branches will have to comply to all conditions listed below;

Many sessions throughout the region - Backyard composting training sessions
Again this year, la MRC de Vaudreuil-Soulanges has mandated the
non-profit organization Terres en Ville to offer Vaudreuil-Soulanges
residents several French backyard composting training sessions to
promote the recovery of domestic organic residues.
Sessions are offered free of charge to all Vaudreuil-Soulanges
residents. It is not necessary to register to participate. Let us remind
you that organic residues represent fifty nine percent (59 %) of
domestic wastes sent to landfills. Composting is therefore a very simple
gesture to reduce the volume of garbage sent to landfills
and produce useful fertilizing compost.
For more information on the subject,
see our green file on domestic Composting.

MRC Vaudreuil-Soulanges will again this year be offering training on composting

Dead leaves
SAINT-LAZARE (Québec), May 7, 2012
Ville de Saint-Lazare wishes to remind you that branches are not accepted in the compostable paper bags used for the leaf collections.
Thanks for helping our local farmers reclaim these bags appropriately!
So be careful for the next collections planned on May 29, June 12 and June 26.
Only leaves and green residues placed in compostable paper bags will be picked-up.
• The Town won’t distribute bags. Compostable paper bags are available in most
hardware stores including Home Hardware de Saint-Lazare, 1704-B Chemin Sainte-Angélique;
• No paper bag limit is imposed;
• Bags must be placed by the roadside by 7 a.m.;
• Close bags without adhesive tape and keep them in a dry area;
• Bags that are too heavy will not be picked up.. A good indicator: if you cannot lift it yourself,
chances are those who proceed to the collection will not either;
• Make sure you buy 110 litre bags (approx. 35 gallons) (Dimension: 16 in. x 12 in. x 35 in.);
• Branches are not accepted;
• Collections will take place on Saint-Lazare’s entire territory.
Paper bags have many benefits, they are biodegradable and compostable.
Leaves and green residues collected will be composted by the MRC.
For more information, contact Lyne Mousseau, project leader (environment)
at 450-424-8000, ext. 248 or lmousseau@ville.saint-lazare.qc.ca.

Reducing water overconsumption and waste View our short webcast

Every drop counts
Count the number of times you turn on a tap each day, from brushing your
teeth to washing your car to making your evening cup of cocoa. Now
multiply that amount by the number of members in your family. That adds
up to a lot of water, about 335 litres of water each day per person. On
a per capita basis, Canadians are the second highest water consumers in the world.
Demand for water is on the rise, from increased populations,
manufacturing, irrigation and other manmade uses. Meantime pollution,
declining water tables and prolonged drought conditions are shrinking
the usable supply.
Using less water is essential not only to ensure a steady supply of
water, but also to lower water and heating bills associated with pumping
water to our homes and warming it for various household uses. Shutting
off water when it’s not being used and using less water to do the same
job are two simple ways you can preserve this precious resource, before
it literally goes down the drain.
Go with the low-flow
Installing a low-flow shower head will be a very smart addition to your
water conservation plans. Available at most home building and supply
stores, these fixtures use about half of the water of a conventional
shower head. Buy a model with a shut-off button that allows you to
interrupt the flow while you lather up or shampoo.
A better flush
Environ About 65% of indoor home water use occurs in our bathrooms, and
toilets are the single greatest water users.
Upgrading your toilet can lead to significant water savings that you can
bank on over the life of the purchase. Replacing an 18-litre-per-flush
toilet with an ultra-low-volume six-litre flush model represents
a 66% savings in water flushed and will cut indoor water use by about 30%.
The dual-flush toilet takes water-efficiency one step further by using 6 litres of water to flush solid waste but only three litres to flush liquid waste.
Stop the leaks
Leaky fixtures waste a huge amount of water. A hot water faucet that leaks one drip per second will waste 9,000 litres per year, while a toilet that runs after flushing can waste up to 200,000 litres of water in a year.
Fix leaking faucets as soon as possible. To find out if your toilet is leaking, put two or three drops of food colouring in the tank at the back of the toilet. Wait a few minutes. If the colour shows up in the bowl, there's a leak.
If your toilet leaks, make sure that the flapper valve inside the tank is sitting properly in the valve seat. Also check that the flush valve lift wires are not bent or misaligned and that the valve seat is not corroded. All of these can be fixed easily and inexpensively. If, however, the leak is around the base of the toilet where it sits on the floor, call a professional.
More Water Conservation Tips
- Take quick showers instead of baths; you’ll use up to 50% less hot water.
- When washing or shaving, partially fill the sink and use that water rather than running the tap continuously.
- Turn the water off while you are brushing your teeth.

The preservation of water begins at home with the awareness of our consumer habits.
Preserving water does not mean reducing our quality of life by depriving ourselves of water.
Just reducing the waste of water makes a big difference!
