Public Awareness Campaign for Civic Numbers A team on the road to find you! Français
SAINT-LAZARE (Québec) – September 5, 2006

Saint-Lazare’s Service de sécurité incendie will be pursuing its Public Awareness Campaign on Sunday, September 10, with the help of the Comité d’action des citoyens en sécurité publique to emphasize the importance of having a visible civic number on their building, whether or not construction has been completed. As part of the campaign, the Service de sécurité incendie and the Citizens’ action committee will drive through all Saint-Lazare streets to see how visible you are. Notices will be given to owners of all buildings not displaying their number or not properly displaying it. According to By-Law no. 560, all buildings must be identified with a distinct civic number visible from the street.

For every resident’s safety, including that of construction or renovation service providers working on our territory, it is essential to properly display that number. If your building is in construction, you must display your number on a temporary sign. Avoid blocking the sight of your address with shrubs, trees, or hanging flowerpots in front of the number. Also, many building numbers are hard to see from the street because they do not sufficiently contrast from the rest of the house. Gold colored finishes for example, are hard to see on beige brick. A simple coat of white paint will often help resolve the problem. In the case of a building located far away on the property or a building hidden by tall hedges or several trees, the civic number should be displayed near the street.

See for yourself how visible you are from the street! If you can’t see your address quickly, chances are nor can others! So remedy the situation as soon as possible! This gesture could save your life or that of a loved one! In case of emergency, the emergency services will be able to find your house faster and will be able to intervene quicker in a life-threatening situation. Furthermore, it will facilitate the delivery of your building materials!
