SAINT-LAZARE (Québec), July 20, 2009
With the camping season around the corner, the Montérégie Forest Agency
would like to remind you how important it is to buy firewood to protect
our forests. Our forests are increasingly threatened by insects and
exotic diseases such as the emerald ash borer and the Butternut canker.
The local purchase of firewood becomes an important action to limit
their propagation. For example, the emerald ash borer will travel at the
most twenty kilometres per year but in the trunk of a car it could
travel several hundreds of kilometres in just a few hours. Also try not
to bring home logs from the campsite. Similar awareness campaigns are in
progress in Ontario and in the United States. U.S. customs officers are
on the look out! Help reduce the spread of invasive species read about it: www.afm.qc.ca/bulletin/depliant.pdf
